Ok, bearing in mind that I've just been on another thread commenting on how much I hate some of the doctors I've been saddled with, after going through some of the heath care debates on here I can at least say that however annoying those doctors were, I could at least go and see them.
We all know how useless the NHS can be. We've all had a bad GP or an 8 hour wait for an appendix removal or a 6 month wait to see a specialist. They muck up. They're expensive. They're constantly being inspected and told that they're too dirty or inefficiant or not considerate enough.
But in the face of this US heathcare debate I am SO GLAD that I have them to fall back on.
I feel secure in the knowledge that if I get diabetes, cancer, heart disease, break my bones or get an infection I'm covered. I wont have to freak out about the cost of healthcare. I wont have to freak out about the medication costs. I can go to the nearest hospital and they will deal with it and that will be it.
However badly they deal with it, however stressfull the diagnosis and treatment and beaurocracy is, I wont have to deal with either a bill or worry that my insurance wont pay out.
One friend I know worked for minimum wage and raised 2 kids to adulthood for years, then got breast cancer (now in remission) and if she had been in the US, she wouldnt have had insurance.
Basically, I may criticise the NHS but I am very proud and grateful that its something we have.
