Still tired of life
At work I saw a training video on the kind of treatment refugee children get at school at the hands of their peers and how isolated they tend to be and me having been one of those kids, I could empathise with them. But it got me thinking (and remembering) that although I was the only one of my race and colour in my school, I was not the only one who people used to try and fuck with and we all did things that we now think are kind of embarassing so that we could fit in and not be fucked with as much.
One of the things I used to do to try to relate to the kids at school was to deliberately get sunburnt. Most of them would talk (and complain) about how it only took an hour's exposure in the sun to be burned and they used to show off the parts of them that were red and peeled. At first I felt isolated because it took a long time for me to burn (because I was darker skinned than all of them) and so when summer time came around I used to play outside for 8 or 9 hours to make sure that I would get burned and then when I went to school I had something to talk about too. LOL!
I have many more stories like this but this one makes me laugh the most so feel free to throw your own funny (or embarassing) stories of your attempts to blend in/relate to your peers at school (or even as an adult). Let us all share our dysfunctionality and laugh at it!! LOL
