The article posted on the homepage was very interesting. I'm following up on the main page rather than the WLS page because I think this subject is of general interest. The medical establishment has been pushing WLS as a solution for both personal issues (i.e people who are unhappy being fat) and as a solution to every increasing healthcare costs. With respect to the second issue WLS appears to be a total bust. In addition to very substantial surgical costs it appears that annual costs of WLS recipients are no less than those of fat people who didn't undergo WLS.

This of course ties in with other initiatives that seek to reduce obesity (from shaming fat kids to cutting poor people off aid). If the sledge hammer of WLS doesn't work these other methods seem doomed to failure as well --but not before they inflict a lot of pain and suffering upon fat people.
